Assam to have 19 new cancer care units

Guwahati (Assam) , May 21 : Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today announced that 19 cancer care units will be set up in the state in collaboration with the Tata Trust and Ratan Tata, who is the chairman of major Tata group companies will lay the foundation stone.
 
The foundation stone will be laid centrally here on June 13, he said adding the new units would be set up to provide advanced treatment to the cancer patients of the north east.

Two killed as gunmen open fire near Assam-Arunachal border

Guwahati (Assam) , May 19 : Two persons were killed after suspected gunmen fired indiscriminately at a grocery shop in a remote are along Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border on Friday late evening, police said.
 
The incident took place at Rupai in eastern Assam's Tinsukia district, the police said.
 
 
According to locals, two gunmen came to a grocery shop and fired randomly, leading to death of two on the spot.
 
 

Now, Assam BJP MLA has to prove citizenship

Guwahati (Assam) , May 19 : A BJP legislator from Borkhola  constituency in Assam along with several members of his family have been served notices by the Foreigners' Tribunal, suspecting them of being "doubtful citizens".
 
The Foreigners' Tribunal (FT) No 1 today sent notices to the MLA from Barak Valley, Kishore Nath, his wife Nilima Nath, four brothers -- Matilal Nath, Pradip Nath, Jagdish Nath, Manik Nath -- and sister-in-law Rakhi Nath, the BJP legislator said.
 
 

Assam: CBI arrest ONGC official for demanding bribe

Sivasagar (Assam) , May 17 : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday arrested a Deputy General Manager of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Assam's Sivasagar city for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs two lakh from a man for passing his pending bills.
 
The accused, who was booked under section 7 of the IPC Act, 1988, was produced before the Special Judge for CBI cases in Guwahati.
 

Assam : CM reviews flood preparedness

Guwahati( Assam)  May 17 :Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal  directed Water Resources Department (WRD) and other related departments to remain fully prepared to tackle floods during the coming monsoon season, an official release said here.
 
The chief minister reviewed the flood preparedness with Water Resources Minister Keshab Mahanta and senior officials.
 
Floods caused by heavy rain in the state as well as in upper reaches of its neighbours are a recurring problem for Assam that affects its people and economy.

Assam : 5 minor boys rescued, 2 traffickers held

Guwahati (Assam) , May 16: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) rescued five minor boys and arrested two traffickers from Rangiya Railway Staion in Assam, Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) officials said on Wednesday.
 
"On getting intelligence input about movement of traffickers with minors, constables were deployed in plain clothes as decoys, who approached the suspects, conversed with them at Rangia station on Tuesday," NFR Chief Public Relation officer, Pranav Jyoti Sharma said on Wednesday.
 
 

Assam govt employees to support AASU against Citizenship Bill

Guwahati (Assam) , May 16 : The government employees of Assam will support the All Assam Students Union (AASU) in their state-wide protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, with the call 'Job not above Motherland'.
 
Reminiscent of the anti-foreigners Assam Agitation (1979-1985), Sodou Asom Karmachari Parishad (SAKP), a major association of government employees, will launch a joint movement with AASU to oppose the bill and for an error-free National Register of Citizens that is being updated.
